When it comes to dieting, far too often we take those first steps towards weight loss bliss for what we later determine are all the wrong reasons. Ultimately however, if your reason works for you there is no truly wrong reason to diet. The trick is in finding the reason that will actually work for you.
I’ve seen all kinds of excellent motivators when it comes to dieting and taking your dieting seriously. One of the more common reasons is to lose weight. This is as good of a reason as any. Some want to get back into the size 5 jeans they wore in high school while others would simply like to be able to look in the mirror once again without feeling guilt. For some this is a simple matter of vanity and for others it is finally managing to deal with what has become a lifelong problem. If you find the inspiration you need to be successful with your dieting this time as opposed to others, then that is the perfectly plausible and acceptable reason for you to diet.
Other reasons for dieting include a desire to be more physically fit. Some of us have a deep and abiding desire to live as long as possible and firmly believe that the best possible method for accomplishing this goal is to live the healthiest life possible. This is another excellent reason for losing weight and getting into shape. If it works for you that is. The thing to remember is that every person is going to have to find their very own motivation deep within.
Yet another great reason is to have the energy you need to keep up with your little ones. This is one of the most heartbreaking side effects for most when it comes to obesity. There is simply no energy left over at the end of the day to enjoy doing things with your precious little ones who are young for such a very short amount of time. You desperately want to be able to build those precious memories with them but absolutely have no energy with which to do so. If that isn’t bad enough you probably (if you are considered morbidly obese) have noticed that many of the simplest activities with your children often bring you physical pain that is the direct result of your weight.
Revenge is a dish that is best served cold and another excellent motivator for some when it comes to dieting and taking off those pesky pounds. Losing a great deal of weight takes time in many cases so you must be able to maintain your motivation even when things are going rough along the way. The path to a new body is not an easy path. This is for those who have some serious emotional healing to do and the best revenge for old slights and wounds is to come back more beautiful than ever before. If this motivation is what it takes for you to take off the pounds then this is the motivation to which you should cling.
Religion is another common weight loss motivation. Some people believe the body should be treated as a temple. There is nothing wrong with this philosophy at all, though it takes some us longer to find our way to that line of thinking than others. Religion and faith are powerful motivators, as they have been known to bring healing to those in need by the power of their faith or their prayers. If your faith can give you the will power and strength you need in order to reach your dieting and weight loss goals then by all means lean on your faith and hold it close.
No matter what motivation you have for dieting and losing weight if you find it is no longer working for you, then you need to find another motivator quickly. Without proper motivation it is quite unlikely that you will ever meet your weight loss goals.

There are many potential motivators–some of which are a little more persuasive to me than others.
I really think that health concerns alone should be enough impetus to get someone to reach a healthy weight, but whatever works, right?
One thing is for sure–you’re right about the fact that an unmotivated person probably won’t get to an ideal weight.

I’ve tried dieting but I can’t help myself when it comes to deserts!
I just demolished a plate of apple tarts, when everybody else only had one each.

A lot of women do dieting for the wrong reasons. There are many that look fine but due to media and celebs e.t.c they have this visual image of perfection. And unfrotunatly it means that beign a size 0 is perfect. But this all depends on the indiviuals, some women look better when they are slightly larger

I loved this post. I diet a lot, and it is very easy to lose all motivation for your diet. The key is to find things good like you have done. It feels good to be in shape, and this is usually my main motivator to stay healthy.

I don’t know that if it is true or not but i think it is similar to “quit smoking”. I couldn’t do that until I had some strong reason, then I have one solid reason, I was able to quit smoking.

i agree, motivation is everything, especially in dieting. i love to eat, and it’s frustrating that i can’t eat as much as i want because my metabolism is slow. so i have to watch what i eat.
i experienced losing 40 pounds back when i was younger, and i remember the only motivation i had was to look good. i was disgusted with the extra weight and i wanted to wear good clothes, so i guess that motivated me to diet successfully. now, it’s a lot harder because… i don’t know, i guess i’m less motivated now.

One thing I’ve observed, if you shed pounds by dieting it comes back very easily, once you stop dieting. But it is hard to follow the exercise routine

Diets are good but exercise is extremely important to balance it off. Eat well and do not over eat. Don’t just eat cause you don’t have much else to do.

For one month now, I have been following a strict diet, choosing the right food and avoiding eating too much. I also decide to enroll myself to the gym…The reason why? Simply because I want to have a healthy lifestyle and I want to be fit. And we must admit that if you have a good and well proportioned body you’ll going to have a better confidence, but of course to be healthy is my main reason why I do all the working out and following those proper diets.

I agree Jenny not one weight is best for all girls, some girls are just naturally skinny and are healthy with it where other girls look like skeletons and need a bit of padding to look more healthy. I think people think about weight too much and should focus more on being healthy, that way weight wouldnt be the issue it would be a side issue of being healthy and would work itself out.

The best motivator for me to shed off those extra pounds is health matters and I wanted to have that long lasting energy to cuddle and play my daughter.There’s a long road for her and I wanted to be fit and healthy to support her all the way.

In my case, I want to lose weight to feel good. I want to be able to wear my clothes when I was a size 4… Since I had my daughter, all I did was gain weight. I became busy at work and hardly find time to exercise. But now I have motivated myself and have forced to have a daily routine that includes going to the gym.Also I am cutting down on my eating… I hope to be thinner in a few months. Thanks everyone…

I think the problem with dieting is dieting itself. When I think about diet, I think about deprivation. You can deprive yourself of the things that you love only for a little time. Then, you feel frustrated, you lose motivation, and you binge eat, and gain back all the hard lost weight… I believe you need to enjoy what you eat to be able to lose weight. Then, what needs to change, is how much you’ll eat.
A lot of people will tell you that they are trying to lose weight to be healthy. But a lot of people would swallow any pill, whether it is good for their health or not, if that pill had the power to make them lose 10 pounds…

I think it’s just really hard to get used to being hungry which is part of any diet. You can eat but not to complete gorged satisfaction.

Health should be the #1 motivator to losing weight. Far too often people want to loose weight for the sole purpose of looking better to the opposite sex. Yes, to some looking better improves self esteem, but feeling healthy inside and out is a much better, long lasting feeling!

Good article. It’s too bad more people don’t have more internal motivation just to live better and healthier. Everyone seems to need and call it an excuse to get healthy. To me, not being healthy would need an excuse and most people share a common one. They are lazy.
